About Joy

In short, I am a full time media executive, part time housewife, part time PA to my husband, part time mad baker. I am a Singaporean who spends most of my time daydreaming about my perfect kitchen.

If you're still curious, read on.

Whilst most girls my age would be scouring fashion spreads for the newest trends and occupying themselves with acquiring Chanel bags or collecting endless Manolo Blahnik heels, I would rather lose myself in countless cookbooks and fantasies of how the kitchen of my own home would look like in future and spend my money on gum paste tools and baking pans.

I first discovered the joys of baking within the confines of Unilodge’s Room 4095, my humble home whilst studying in Sydney for 3 years. Mum had brought me an oven from Singapore and I would find myself leafing through Donna Hay's cookbooks especially at nightfall in lieu of shuteye. Sometimes, I would be so excited over a specific recipe that I’d trot over to Coles in the wee hours of the night, just to get ingredients for my concoction.

6 years later, I found myself back in university, in Cambridge MA – this time not as a student, but as the wife of a graduate student. With that, it meant going back to a shoe-string food budget and endless hours in the kitchen preparing meals as cost cutting measures. I loved the US for its vast variety of baking apparatus. I could spend up to 3 hours in baking supply shops and I am sure I contributed to the American economy through my many visits to amazon.com

Alvin (my husband) and I are now based in Hong Kong and thankfully, no more leading the impoverished student lifestyle. My love for baking and cooking continues across all oceans and on weekends, I can be found trawling the wet markets in the neighbourhood in search of the freshest ingredients.

This blog will chronicle my experiences in the kitchen (which Alvin teasingly refers to as my lab). Thank you for dropping by and joining me on many (to come) intoxicating journeys in the gourmet world.
